By-elections Today: Results for Five Assembly Seats and One Lok Sabha Seat in Assam to Be Announced

New Delhi, October 9 (Daily Kiran) : The counting of votes for by-elections across five assembly seats in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry, along with one Lok Sabha seat in Assam, will take place today.

In Tamil Nadu, the focus will be on the Madurantakam and Dharmapuram assembly seats. The counting process will commence at 8 AM, starting with postal ballots, followed by the votes cast via electronic voting machines (EVMs). Voting for these two seats, reserved for Scheduled Castes, occurred on October 6. Both the ruling party and major opposition leaders campaigned vigorously in the region.

These elections are crucial for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), which secured 108 seats in the last assembly elections but fell short of the 118 needed for a majority.

In West Bengal, the counting will cover the Nandigram assembly seat in East Midnapore district and the Rejinagar seat in Murshidabad. Voting was conducted under tight security measures. The Nandigram seat has gained attention after All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Sanchita Pradhan Dey withdrew her nomination at the last minute. Political analysts suggest that this could pave the way for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate, Hasi Rani Rath, to win.

Sanchita Pradhan Dey is the mother of Chandranath Rath, who was the personal assistant to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and was tragically murdered on May 6. Adhikari has indicated that Rath’s victory margin in this by-election could exceed his own winning margin from 2016.

Additionally, vote counting will occur for the Thattanachavadi assembly seat in Puducherry and the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat in Assam. The outcomes of these elections will significantly influence the political landscape for the candidates and their respective parties.
