Business Concerns Rise as Protests Disrupt Diwali Season in Connaught Place

Traders in New Delhi express frustration over ongoing protests affecting business during the crucial Diwali season, calling for a protest-free Connaught Place.

New Delhi, October 16 (Daily Kiran) : Traders in New Delhi are voicing their concerns over ongoing protests that are impacting business during the peak Diwali season. They are urging authorities to relocate these demonstrations away from commercial hubs like Connaught Place, as the protests are causing significant disruptions.

Mukesh Chawla, who operates a printing business in Connaught Place, stated that the protests have severely affected operations. He noted that roads are blocked, leading to decreased foot traffic. Chawla has called on the government to ensure that Connaught Place remains free from protests.

Rahul Adlaka, Vice President of the Chamber of Trade and Industry, echoed these sentiments. He mentioned that business comes to a standstill during protests, prompting their organization to send a letter to the Home Minister. Adlaka emphasized that commerce is halted as early as two to three days before a protest is scheduled. Given that the Diwali season is a peak time for sales, he has requested the government to prohibit demonstrations in Delhi for the next three months.

Atul Bhargav, President of the New Delhi Traders Association, highlighted the importance of the festival season from Navratri to Holi. He mentioned that traders have stocked up on goods, and frequent protests hinder customer access. While he acknowledged the right to protest as a democratic freedom, he argued that such activities should take place in designated areas, not in busy commercial zones like Connaught Place.

Rajendra Sharma, another trader in the area, expressed that Connaught Place attracts visitors from across the country and abroad. He pointed out the high costs of doing business there, including rent, utility bills, and employee salaries, and stressed the need to keep the area free from protests.

The ongoing issues have raised alarms among local businesses as they navigate the crucial holiday season amid the disruptions.
