BRS Protests Demand Resignation of Union Minister Following Sons Arrest

Hyderabad, May 18: The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), the main opposition party in Telangana, staged protests across the state on Monday. The party is demanding the immediate resignation of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Bandisanjay Kumar, following the arrest of his son, Bandibhagirath, in a POCSO case. Bandibhagirath is accused of alleged sexual assault against a minor girl.

BRS legislators and leaders led these protests in all assembly constituencies. Demonstrators, holding placards and banners, chanted slogans in support of their demands. A significant protest took place in the Huzurabad assembly constituency, led by BRS MLA P. Kaushik Reddy.

In Vemulawada, BRS workers organized a large demonstration under the leadership of Chalameda Lakshmi Narasimha Rao. They called for justice for the minor victim. Protesters sat on the road with banners and posters, demanding the minister’s immediate resignation. They stated that if the Union Minister refuses to resign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi should remove him from office.

In Gangadhara, former MLA Sunke Ravishankar led a massive protest, reiterating the demand for Bandisanjay’s immediate removal.

Tensions flared at the Nethanna Chowrasta in Sirisilla when BJP workers attempted to disrupt the BRS protest demanding Bandisanjay’s resignation. BRS leaders alleged that BJP workers threw slippers at their peacefully protesting members.

Police intervened to control the situation, using mild force and detaining BJP workers. In Hyderabad, BRS women leaders visited the Bhagyalakshmi Temple at Charminar.

Former MLA G. Sunita told reporters that she prayed to Goddess Bhagyalakshmi to grant wisdom to Bandisanjay and his son. She emphasized that the Union Minister should resign immediately.

BRS Executive President K.T. Rama Rao had previously called for Bandisanjay’s resignation to ensure a fair and independent investigation into the POCSO case involving his son. He remarked that Prime Minister Modi often speaks about “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao,” but if such slogans remain mere political rhetoric, justice cannot be achieved.

Rama Rao raised concerns about the unprecedented situation where a lookout notice had to be issued against the son of a sitting Union Minister. He questioned how the accused could allegedly remain hidden for nine days and who had protected him during that time.

Bandibhagirath was arrested by the Cyberabad police on the night of May 16 and was presented before a magistrate, who remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody.
