New Delhi, May 6: The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is regarded as a vital link for development and security along India’s borders. This organization is not just a typical road construction agency; it plays a crucial role connected to the nation’s security and strategic needs. Every year, May 7 marks its foundation day, commemorating its inception on May 7, 1960. Today, BRO is known for operating in some of India’s most challenging terrains, where conventional construction is nearly impossible.
The primary function of BRO is to construct and maintain roads, bridges, and tunnels in border areas. Notably, this work occurs in regions with severe weather conditions, such as high mountains, snow-covered areas, and inaccessible valleys. BRO’s presence is evident in states like Ladakh, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Himachal Pradesh. In these regions, roads are essential not only for civilian convenience but also for military movement and national security.
At its inception, BRO managed only two projects: Project Tusker in the east (now Vartak) and Project Beacon in the north. Today, the organization has expanded across numerous states and union territories. It is currently undertaking several major projects, continuously advancing with modern technology and innovative engineering. Initially limited in scope, BRO has now constructed thousands of kilometers of roads and hundreds of bridges.
Regarding its achievements, BRO has built thousands of kilometers of roads in India and several friendly nations. In recent years, BRO has completed several crucial projects, including the Sela Tunnel, which has significantly improved connectivity in Arunachal Pradesh. Future projects, such as the Shinkun La Tunnel, are also underway, set to become one of the highest tunnels in the world. These initiatives facilitate rapid military access to borders.
BRO’s work extends beyond road and bridge construction; it also addresses the country’s strategic needs. A robust road network in border areas enables the military to move swiftly in any situation. This is why BRO is considered an essential component of the nation’s security framework.
