New Delhi, August 3: In a significant development, the Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi has acquitted Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, the former president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI), in a sexual harassment case involving female wrestlers. Singh has firmly stated that he has never considered himself a criminal. He expressed hope that the court’s decision would empower those facing false allegations.
Alongside Singh, Vinod Tomar, the former assistant secretary of WFI, was also acquitted in the same case.
Following the court’s ruling, Singh remarked, “This is a huge relief for me. It is also a significant relief for those who are falsely accused. Such allegations can devastate a person, leading to family abandonment and, in some cases, even suicide. My case will serve as a source of strength for all who face wrongful accusations. It should be noted that the allegations against me did not come from ordinary individuals.”
He emphasized that the accusers included Olympic medalists and prominent figures, with major political parties involved. Protests occurred not only within the country but also internationally. Singh hopes that this case will inspire those wrongfully charged. “I have never seen myself as a criminal,” he added.
When asked if he would return to the position he resigned from at the Wrestling Federation of India, Singh clearly stated “no.”
This case has been one of the most talked-about sports and legal controversies in India, beginning in 2023 when renowned female wrestlers accused Singh of inappropriate behavior and sexual harassment during national and international competitions, training camps, and at WFI offices between 2016 and 2022. The recent court ruling has provided Singh with significant relief.
