West Indies Cricket has announced a 16-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20 series against Afghanistan, scheduled to be played in the UAE ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
Regular captain Shai Hope will miss the series, with Brandon King appointed as the new captain. King has previously led the team on a few occasions and will now take charge for this important preparatory series.
Shai Hope, along with Roston Chase and Akil Hossain, are currently participating in the ongoing SA20 league in South Africa, which is why they will not be part of the squad for this series.
Shamar Joseph and Evin Lewis have made a comeback to the team after recovering from injuries. However, Alzarri Joseph has been left out as a precaution to allow him extra time for full fitness. Quentin Sampson has been included in the squad for the first time, replacing Rovman Powell, who has been rested along with Jason Holder and Romario Shepherd as part of workload management.
Head coach Darren Sammy highlighted the importance of this series as a valuable opportunity for players to gain match practice in subcontinental conditions ahead of the T20 World Cup. He also mentioned that the series will help assess players returning to competitive cricket after a long layoff towards the end of 2025.
The T20 series against Afghanistan will take place from January 19 to 22 at the Dubai Cricket Stadium. The West Indies team will depart on January 14 and arrive in the UAE on January 16.
Both West Indies and Afghanistan are known for their exciting T20 cricket. The two teams have faced each other eight times previously, with West Indies winning five matches and Afghanistan three.
