On Monday, which marks her birth anniversary, Bollywood actor Jackie Shroff paid a heartfelt tribute to her.
The actor shared a special photograph of the actress on his Instagram stories, writing, “On the birth anniversary of Suchitra Sen Ji, we remember her.”
Suchitra Sen, born Roma Dasgupta, began her career in Bengali cinema. After marrying and having a daughter, she established herself in the film industry.
At a young age, Suchitra married Dibyendu Sen. She had a passion for singing since childhood, and her husband encouraged her to pursue a career in films, helping her discover her hidden talent.
She started her career in Bengali cinema, although her first film, ‘Shesh Kothay,’ was never released. However, ‘Chowtor’ brought her significant fame, where she starred alongside Uttam Kumar, forming one of the most iconic pairs in Indian cinema. Together, they worked on several films, and in 1963, she became the first Indian actress to win an international award (Moscow) for ‘Saat Paké Bandha.’
Suchitra Sen also enchanted audiences in Hindi cinema with her performances in films like ‘Devdas,’ ‘Aandhi,’ and ‘Bombay Ka Babu.’ She received the Padma Shri in 1972 and the West Bengal government’s highest honor, ‘Banga Bibhushan,’ in 2012. However, she withdrew from public life in 1979 and remained out of the spotlight for 35 years. She passed away from a heart attack in Kolkata on January 17, 2014.
