Blockade of Manipur vehicles in Nagaland unfortunate: CM Biren

Imphal, March 25 : Manipur Chief Minister N Biren has described the blockade of all Manipur bound vehicles in Nagaland as unfortunate. Addressing the media here on Friday at CM Secretariat, Biren said a Manipur police outpost exists about 100 m from the Manipur Nagaland border area on the Manipur side. Southern Angami Public Organization (SAPO) of Nagaland has imposed an indefinite blockade on the national highway leading to Manipur demanding withdrawal of armed personnel and removal of the police post on the Manipur border. Chief Minister Biren said the Manipur police outpost is in Manipur territory and the Manipur government had officially informed the centre and Nagaland government about the blockade. If the blockade continues Biren said, “We have to use alternative ways, we can’t compromise on the boundary”. The Manipur government does not want to confront but wants to resolve the matter politically, he added. For the security of the people in the area and as requested by the people, the police outpost was established, Biren said. There was also a fire in the area, he recalled. Dzuko valley where the police outpost exists is an important ecological area that needs protection. Due to the blockade, all interstate passenger services were stopped and large numbers of people and vehicles remained stranded on the highway. Some of the oil depots were also closed down in Manipur as oil supply has stopped. E-commerce services to Manipur were also affected as goods meant for Manipur were stranded in Assam. There is a shortage of essential commodities in the market and there was the possibility of prices of goods soaring up due to the scarcity. There is no rail connectivity in the state hence Manipur depends on the highway passing through Nagaland for transportation of goods and passengers. There have been no responses from the centre and the Nagaland government so far even though formal information was given by the Manipur government. Various organizations of Manipur have appealed not to block the lifeline of an entire state putting the whole people on ransom to air grievances. NS ARN
