Kolkata, May 5: In a significant victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Sukra Munda has won the Mal Assembly seat in West Bengal. He defeated the Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate, Bulu Chik Baraik, by a margin of 15,492 votes.
Sukra Munda received a total of 112,095 votes, while Bulu Chik Baraik garnered 96,603 votes. The CPI(M) candidate finished third, followed by the Congress candidate in fourth place.
This election marks a continuation of the rivalry between Sukra Munda and Bulu Chik Baraik, who previously contested in the 2021 Assembly elections. In that election, Baraik received 99,086 votes against BJP’s Mahesh Bagi, who secured 93,621 votes.
The Mal Assembly seat is located in the northern part of Jalpaiguri district and is one of seven Assembly seats in the Jalpaiguri Lok Sabha constituency. Established in 1951, this seat has witnessed 17 Assembly elections to date.
Historically, the Congress party dominated the Mal seat, winning six out of seven elections between 1951 and 1972. The CPI secured a single victory in 1957. However, from 1977 onwards, the Left Front gained a stronghold, ruling Bengal for 34 years. The CPI(M) won this seat consecutively seven times from 1977 to 2006.
In 2011, Bulu Chik Baraik won as a CPI(M) candidate but later joined the TMC, winning in both 2011 and 2016. However, his victory margin decreased to just 5,465 votes in 2021.
The BJP has steadily increased its presence in this constituency, finishing second in 2016 with 29,380 votes and further strengthening its position in 2021 with 93,621 votes.
The rapid rise of the BJP in Mal has shifted the political dynamics, as the TMC strives to maintain its hold on the seat while facing a formidable challenge from the BJP.
