BJP Leader Raises Alarm Over Punjab Polices Safety Concerns After ASI Murder

Amritsar, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : In a troubling development for law enforcement in Punjab, BJP leader Sunil Jakhar has raised significant concerns regarding the state’s safety protocols following the murder of an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in Amritsar. The incident has prompted the Punjab government to issue an advisory urging police personnel to avoid traveling alone and to refrain from wearing uniforms while on duty.

Jakhar took to social media platform X on Saturday, questioning the current state of affairs in Punjab. He stated, “What direction is Punjab heading towards? Nowadays, criminals no longer fear the police; instead, it is the police who are afraid of gangsters and thugs.” His comments come in light of the recent killings of multiple police officers at the hands of criminals, leading to the issuance of this advisory, which he claims reflects the grim reality of law and order in the state.

According to Jakhar, the advisory instructs police officers not to travel alone, avoid wearing uniforms while commuting, refrain from using two-wheeled vehicles, and, if possible, utilize public transport for safety.

He further questioned, “Is this the same Punjab Police that once eradicated terrorism from the state?”

The Punjab BJP echoed Jakhar’s sentiments in a statement on Saturday, declaring that law and order in the state has completely deteriorated. The public murder of ASI Harjeet Singh illustrates the audacity of criminals in the region. They emphasized that if the police, who are supposed to protect the public, do not feel safe, then who will ensure the safety of the general populace? The party criticized the government’s claims of a “Vibrant Punjab,” asserting that daily incidents of violence and lawlessness contradict these assertions.

The tragic event occurred late on the night of September 18-19, when two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle shot and killed ASI Harjeet Singh while he was on duty. Police reports indicate that the attack took place around 3 AM when the assailants approached Singh and fired multiple shots at close range. He was subsequently rushed to a nearby private hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Singh hailed from the Tarn Taran district.
