Kolkata, May 5: In a surprising turn of events in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a significant victory in the Haripal constituency, traditionally dominated by the Trinamool Congress (TMC). BJP candidate Madhumita Ghosh triumphed over TMC’s Karabi Manna by a margin of 3,488 votes after 27 rounds of counting.
Madhumita Ghosh received 113,332 votes, while Karabi Manna garnered 109,844 votes. The results were announced at 10:30 PM. Voter turnout in Haripal was recorded at 92.41%, with the overall turnout in Hooghly district at 91.98%.
Madhumita Ghosh, aged 52, is a high school graduate with two criminal cases registered against her. Her total assets are valued at 1.1 crore rupees, with no liabilities. In contrast, TMC candidate Karabi Manna, 51, has no criminal cases against her, with assets worth 12.1 crore rupees and liabilities amounting to 3 crore rupees.
Haripal is primarily a rural constituency, comprising the Haripal community development block and four gram panchayats from the Singur block. This seat was established in 1967 and was once influenced by the United Socialist Party and the Workers Party of India. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) held the seat for seven consecutive terms from 1977 to 2006. Since 2011, the TMC has maintained control, with Becharam Manna winning decisively in 2011 and 2016. In 2021, his wife, Karabi Manna, retained the seat by defeating the BJP by 23,072 votes.
This time, the BJP has successfully penetrated TMC’s traditional stronghold, albeit with a narrow victory margin of 3,488 votes, indicating the competitive nature of the contest.
The TMC has historically dominated in Lok Sabha elections in Haripal, achieving significant leads in 2014, 2019, and 2024. In the 2024 elections, the TMC led the BJP by 32,459 votes, but the BJP has managed to close that gap in the assembly elections this time.
The BJP’s victory in Haripal signals the party’s growing strength in northern and central Bengal. Local anti-incumbency sentiments, development issues, and organizational efforts have benefited the BJP, while the TMC faced challenges in maintaining its traditional voter base.
The weakened position of the Left-Congress alliance also worked in favor of the BJP, although vote transfer remained limited. This victory in Haripal is significant for the BJP as it symbolizes a breach into TMC’s stronghold.
