Bhubaneswar, May 19: Naveen Patnaik, the president of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and leader of the opposition in the Odisha Assembly, criticized the state government regarding the law and order situation following a brutal attack on a young man and his female friend in Brahmapur.
Patnaik took to the social media platform ‘X’ to express his concerns, alleging that Odisha is witnessing a terrifying phase of lawlessness. He claimed that instead of governance by the BJP, it appears that a ‘goonda raj’ is prevailing in the state.
Describing the attack on the couple, where they were reportedly beaten severely, as entirely inhumane, Patnaik stated that the incident has instilled fear and distress among the people of Odisha.
He sarcastically remarked that it seems the BJP government has handed over Odisha to criminals. Criminals are carrying out brutal acts without fear. Where is the police administration? Where is the rule of law? How much longer will the government prioritize celebrations over the safety of the common people?
Patnaik also raised questions about how much more embarrassment Odisha will have to endure due to the government’s inaction. He demanded that the BJP-led state government stop providing protection to criminals involved in various heinous crimes.
He emphasized that no government can function solely on hollow claims; people need security. The deteriorating law and order situation and rampant ‘goonda raj’ are tarnishing Odisha’s reputation across the country. The government must cease protecting criminals and take immediate and stringent action against offenders to ensure public safety.
On Monday evening, a young man named Umesh Rath was standing with his female friend near a restaurant on Giri Road in Brahmapur when some miscreants attacked him due to an old feud. When his female friend attempted to intervene, she also sustained injuries. A video of the incident quickly went viral on social media, raising widespread concerns about the law and order situation.
