Patna, February 19: During the budget session of the Bihar Legislative Assembly, both the ruling party and the opposition are questioning the effectiveness of the alcohol prohibition law. RJD member Sunil Kumar stated on Thursday that there is no area in Bihar where alcohol is unavailable.

He went so far as to say that if one searches with goodwill, alcohol can be found anywhere, even within the assembly complex. In a conversation with the media, he remarked, “There are many legislators in Bihar whose homes are filled with bottles of alcohol. People gather there to drink, but I do not find it appropriate to name them. They are powerful individuals associated with the ruling party.”

Sunil Kumar, a close aide of former Chief Minister Lalu Yadav, further claimed that alcohol sales today exceed those from the time when the ban was not in place. He stated, “The entire Bihar has become ‘Flying Punjab’ now.”

He accused the government of ruining the new generation by enforcing the alcohol ban, stating that youth are falling victim to dry intoxication. “Our future generation is being destroyed,” he added.

He emphasized that an empire of illegal earnings worth ₹25,000 crore has been established annually. With 11 years of alcohol prohibition, illegal alcohol trade in Bihar has reached ₹2.5 lakh crore. School children are also becoming victims of dry intoxication.

Kumar insisted that a review of the alcohol ban law is essential. “Just as God is not seen, alcohol is also not visible, yet it is available everywhere,” he asserted.

The National Lok Morcha party, led by Upendra Kushwaha, also called for a review of the law in the assembly. Party MLA Madhav Anand stated that despite the law being passed, alcohol is still illegally available, causing revenue losses for the state.
