Aurangabad, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : Authorities in Aurangabad, Bihar, have made significant strides in combating crime by arresting two suspects linked to an inter-state chain snatching gang. The arrests occurred on September 20, 2026, following a series of chain snatching incidents that had plagued the city.
The police seized a country-made pistol, two live cartridges, two master keys, a wrench, a stolen motorcycle, and a mobile phone from the suspects. Both individuals are residents of Jurabganj in the Koda area of Katihar district.
Superintendent of Police Upendra Nath Verma reported that a surge in chain snatching cases prompted the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT). This team, led by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Sadar-1, was tasked with investigating the incidents, apprehending the culprits, and recovering the stolen chains.
The SIT utilized CCTV footage, technical analysis, and intelligence gathering to advance their investigation. They discovered that a single gang was responsible for all the reported incidents. Surveillance was then conducted on identified suspects.
On September 20, the SIT received information indicating that gang members were planning to commit further thefts in Aurangabad. Acting on this intelligence, they successfully apprehended two suspects, identified as Nayanshu alias Abhay Kumar and Hairan Kumar.
During interrogation, the suspects admitted their involvement in chain snatching and theft incidents across various districts in Bihar, as well as in several areas of Jharkhand. Police have linked them to the Koda gang, with approximately 70 cases registered against them across different jurisdictions. In Aurangabad alone, the suspects are implicated in seven chain snatching cases.
Moreover, they face charges in multiple police stations in Rohtas district, including Nasiriganj, Kochas, Airkotha, Sasaram Nagar, and Bikramganj. Cases have also been filed against them in Munger, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, and Jharkhand. Notably, some of the suspects have previously served time in jail.
The Superintendent of Police has indicated that additional gang members have been identified, and efforts to apprehend them are ongoing. The arrests are expected to significantly reduce chain snatching incidents in Aurangabad.
Previously, Aurangabad police had recovered four stolen chains from the municipal area. Investigators are now questioning the arrested suspects to gather further information about other incidents and the gang’s network.
