Bihar Assembly Passes Confidence Motion for New Government Led by Samrat Chaudhary

Patna, April 24: The newly formed government in Bihar, led by Samrat Chaudhary, successfully proved its majority in the Assembly on Friday. A voice vote confirmed the confidence motion, following a debate in which the ruling party secured a majority, while the opposition lagged behind in numbers.

Assembly Speaker Prem Kumar announced the passing of the motion. Given the existing numbers, the likelihood of a voting scenario was low. In the 243-member Assembly, the government needed 122 votes to establish its majority. However, the NDA showcased its unity by claiming support from 201 legislators.

On his first visit as Chief Minister, Samrat Chaudhary was welcomed with a bouquet of flowers. It is noteworthy that he took office after the resignation of Nitish Kumar, the national president of JDU, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha. Subsequently, the NDA government was formed under Chaudhary’s leadership on April 15. A special session of the Assembly was convened for the confidence vote.

According to constitutional provisions, a new Chief Minister must prove their majority in the Assembly to legitimize the state government. In the November 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, the NDA secured a majority with 202 legislators, placing the government in a strong position ahead of the confidence vote. However, following Nitin Naveen’s election as a Rajya Sabha member, he resigned from the Assembly.

Following the formation of the new government, the allocation of departments among ministers has been completed. Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary currently oversees 29 departments, including General Administration, Home, Cabinet Secretariat, Vigilance, and Elections. Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary has been assigned 10 departments, including Water Resources and Parliamentary Affairs, while Deputy Chief Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav is responsible for eight departments, including Energy and Planning & Development. The expansion of the Bihar Cabinet is still pending.
