Washington, March 21 : US President Joe Biden on Monday intends to declare Myanmar’s repression of Rohingya Muslim population as “genocide”. Secretary of State Antony Blinken plans to make the long-anticipated designation on Monday at an event at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, ABC News quoted officials as saying on condition of anonymity because the move had not yet been publicly announced. Though the designation does not mean that “drastic new measures” will be imposed against Myanmar’s junta government, it will lead to more international pressure on the government that is already facing genocide accusations at the International Court of Justice. The government has already been hit with multiple layers of US sanctions since the campaign against the Rohingya ethnic minority began in the country’s western Rakhine state in 2017, ABC News reported. Since August 2017, over 700,000 Rohingya Muslims have fled Myanmar to refugee camps in Bangladesh. The Myanmar security forces have been accused of mass rapes, killing and burnings thousands of homes. RNJ
