Washington, January 16 : Outgoing U.S. President Joe Biden, in his farewell address on Wednesday, urged Americans to stay vigilant against the growing power of elitism. Speaking from the Oval Office, Biden reflected on his five-decade-long political career, highlighting his administration’s achievements while cautioning about the perils of unchecked wealth and power consolidation.

A Warning Against Elitism

Biden pointed to the emergence of a “triangular elitism”—a nexus of wealth, influence, and power—that he described as a potential threat to democracy and individual freedoms. Though he refrained from naming individuals, Biden’s remarks appeared to address the incoming administration of Donald J. Trump and billionaires like Elon Musk, cautioning against their potential influence over governance and policy.

In his address, Biden said, “America faces its greatest threat from the unchecked expansion of the wealthy and influential elite. This is a danger to democracy and the freedoms we hold dear.”

Reflections on Achievements and Regrets

Biden took pride in championing climate change initiatives and preserving democratic values during his presidency. He acknowledged, however, that several of his policies failed to resonate with all Americans. “The seeds we’ve sown will grow and flourish in the decades to come,” he stated optimistically.

He called for reforms in the Supreme Court’s term limits and ethical practices, and advocated for prohibiting members of Congress from stock trading to ensure transparency and accountability.

Biden also celebrated a major foreign policy accomplishment, announcing a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, which he said underscored his commitment to global peace.

Biden emphasized the dangers posed by misinformation and disinformation, which he said were fueling abuse of power. He urged Americans to preserve the nation’s democratic ideals and institutions, describing them as pillars of a free society.

The 17-minute address, reminiscent of a tradition dating back to George Washington, concluded with Biden signing a copy of his speech for family members present at the event. He referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as his “incredible partner,” lauding her contributions during their tenure.
