Bhairav Garhi Temple: A Historical Gem in Uttarakhands Garhwal Region

Dehradun, September 2: The Garhwal culture of Uttarakhand holds a significant place due to its ancient temples and forts. Among these, the Bhairav Garhi Temple, located in the village of Kirtikhal in Pauri Garhwal district, stands out for its historical and natural significance.

This temple is said to be linked to the kings of Garhwal, and it is believed that every wish of the devotees who visit is fulfilled. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has also urged everyone to visit the temple.

He shared a special video of the temple on the social media platform X, stating, “The Bhairav Garhi Temple in Kirtikhal village of Pauri Garhwal district is nestled among the naturally beautiful mountains. Lord Bhairav is considered the protector of Garhwal. Be sure to visit this sacred temple when you come to Pauri Garhwal.”

Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,400 meters (9,000 feet) above sea level, the Bhairav Garhi Temple (also known as Langur Garhi) is a renowned religious and historical site.

The Bhairav Garhi Temple is regarded as one of the 52 forts (Garh) of Garhwal. According to history, at the end of the 18th century (around 1791) and the beginning of the 19th century, when the Gorkhas of Nepal invaded the Garhwal and Kumaon regions, they besieged this strategically important Langur Garh for nearly two years. However, the Gorkha army faced defeat just 28 days after the war commenced.

Impressed by the miracles and power of Bhairavnath during this battle, an officer of the Gorkha army (Thapa) offered a copper plate weighing around 40 kilograms at the temple. Since then, Bhairav Garhi has been worshipped as the ‘Protector of Garhwal.’

It is believed that Kalanath Bhairav has a fondness for black items. Hence, bread made from mandua (finger millet flour), known as ‘Rot,’ is offered as prasad here. Every year in June (Jyeshtha month), a grand fair is organized, attracting devotees from far and wide. Additionally, special kirtans and community meals are held in the temple complex during the month of Sawan.
