Bengaluru, May 8: The Karnataka State Election Commissioner, G.S. Sangreshi, directed officials during a crucial meeting on Friday to announce the dates for the municipal elections under the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) between June 14 and June 24.
This significant meeting was convened to discuss the elections for five municipal corporations under the GBA. However, GBA Chairman and Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, along with Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, were absent from the meeting.
The meeting was chaired by State Election Commissioner G.S. Sangreshi, with GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao also in attendance.
Following the meeting, Sangreshi stated in a press conference that he instructed officials to finalize the election schedule and announce it between June 14 and June 24.
He emphasized that, according to the law, the State Election Commission must consult with the GBA before finalizing the election schedule, which was the purpose of this meeting.
Sangreshi mentioned, “All necessary preparations for conducting the elections have been completed. Only the announcement of dates remains. The GBA has informed us that their preparations are complete.”
He noted that the GBA has been asked to finalize the schedule, considering the census and other administrative processes. However, he clarified that the election dates must be set before June 30.
He added, “We also need to inform the Supreme Court regarding this matter. I have instructed officials to finalize the dates within the stipulated timeframe. However, we do not have the authority to postpone the elections. We have only requested that the dates be set between June 14 and June 24.”
Meanwhile, GBA Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao reported that the processes related to ward delimitation, voter list preparation, and reservations have already been completed.
He stated that instructions for appointing Returning Officers (RO), Assistant Election Registration Officers (AERO), and Booth Level Officers (BLO) have also been issued.
Maheshwar Rao further mentioned that officials have been directed to expedite the completion of ongoing government schemes and programs before the elections.
