Mumbai, March 3: The vibrant festival of Holi will be celebrated across the country on March 4. The connection between Holi and Hindi cinema spans centuries. Filmmakers have always emphasized Holi songs to resonate with audiences. The cult classic film ‘Sholay’ features the beloved song ‘Holi Ke Din,’ which has become a staple in many playlists. But do you know how long it took to shoot this iconic scene and where the colors were sourced from?
In ‘Holi Ke Din,’ viewers enjoyed the playful antics of Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Amitabh Bachchan, and Jaya Bachchan. However, the film’s climax disrupts this festive atmosphere when Gabbar and his gang launch an attack on the joyful residents of Ramgarh. The sudden shift from celebration to action captivated audiences, and today, this song remains a top choice for Holi celebrations. Directed by Ramesh Sippy, the song took ten days to shoot, requiring the cast to remain covered in colors to maintain continuity.
To create the Holi atmosphere on set, the filmmakers sourced nearly 100 tons of gulal from various parts of the country. In an interview, Ramesh Sippy revealed that the shooting of the Holi sequence involved a significant amount of preparation. The entire filming lasted ten days, during which the actors were covered in colors without makeup, simply applying gulal to their faces. This dedication resulted in the creation of an iconic song.
Regarding the film itself, ‘Sholay’ set new benchmarks for success upon its release in 1975. Initially, the film struggled at the box office, but soon, long lines formed outside theaters as audiences flocked to see it. ‘Sholay’ is now regarded as one of the most successful films in Hindi cinema, famously running for an unprecedented 2000 days in a Mumbai theater.
