New Delhi, March 12: According to a report, the T20 World Cup champions, India, may play additional T20 matches in Sri Lanka and Ireland over the next 12 months as part of a busy international schedule. These proposed matches will coincide with already scheduled bilateral tours and tournament series.
As per Cricbuzz, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is contemplating adding three T20 matches to the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka. These matches are expected to take place before two Test matches that are already part of the World Test Championship (WTC) and are scheduled for July-August.
The report indicates that Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has proposed additional T20 matches to aid fundraising for flood relief efforts in the country. Sri Lanka was severely affected by Cyclone Dita in November, which caused extensive damage in many areas.
The Indian T20 team is currently led by Suryakumar Yadav. It is likely that the Sri Lanka tour will commence with three T20 matches, followed by a series of two Test matches. Before heading to Sri Lanka, India is set to tour England, where they will play a white-ball series consisting of three ODIs and five T20 internationals from July 1 to July 19. However, discussions are ongoing regarding a three-match T20 series in Dublin, Ireland, on their return from England.
Sources have reported that negotiations between the BCCI and Cricket Ireland are ongoing. If an agreement is reached, the matches could take place in the last week of June.
The Indian cricket team has previously played short bilateral series in Dublin, having competed in T20 internationals there in 2018, 2022, and 2023, as part of efforts to support the development of cricket in Ireland.
The proposed matches in Ireland may coincide with India’s home series against Afghanistan, scheduled from June 6 to June 20, which includes one Test and three ODIs.
