Dhaka, 4 January – The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has formally requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to move all their matches in the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 to venues outside India, citing security concerns.
This move comes amid ongoing tensions between India and Bangladesh, which previously led to the Indian Cricket Board (BCCI) releasing Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) squad for IPL 2025 on BCCI’s directive.
Following a Zoom meeting on Saturday, the BCB convened an emergency board meeting on Sunday. In an official statement, the board expressed deep concerns about the overall situation surrounding Bangladesh’s participation in World Cup matches scheduled in India.
The statement said, “After a thorough review of the developments over the past 24 hours and considering the growing security concerns for the Bangladesh team in India, along with advice from the Bangladesh government, the board has decided that the national team will not travel to India for the tournament under current circumstances.”
The BCB has formally urged the ICC to consider rescheduling all Bangladesh’s matches to venues outside India to ensure the safety and well-being of players, officials, board members, and other stakeholders. The board hopes for an immediate and understanding response from the ICC.
The Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 is scheduled to begin on 7 February and conclude on 8 March, with India and Sri Lanka as co-hosts. Bangladesh is placed in Group C and was due to play matches against West Indies (7 February), Italy (9 February), and England (14 February) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, followed by their final group match against Nepal on 17 February at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma supported the BCCI’s decision to release Mustafizur Rahman, stating, “The board has taken a well-considered decision. I believe it is a prudent step in everyone’s best interest.”
