Canberra: Following the Bondi Beach attack, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faced mounting pressure to take firm action against the killing of Jewish individuals. After weeks of persistent demands from the Jewish community, business leaders, and sports figures, the Prime Minister announced on Thursday the formation of a Royal Commission to investigate the terrorist incident that occurred during the Hanukkah celebrations.
Albanese described the attack as an “antisemitic terrorist act inspired by ISIS” and labelled it the deadliest such incident in Australia’s history. The Royal Commission will examine antisemitism, the need for social cohesion, and security measures in the country.
Australian media reports suggested that the decision followed intense pressure from victims’ families, the Jewish community, and prominent figures calling for a thorough investigation into antisemitism and security lapses. The attack claimed 15 lives and injured several others. According to ABC.net.au, the Prime Minister made the decision after consultations with victims’ families and Jewish leaders, who had been urging the Labor Government for decisive action.
During a press conference at Parliament House in Canberra, Albanese stated, “I have repeatedly said that our Government’s priority is to promote unity and social harmony. Australia must address these issues effectively.”
Authorities and critics had been demanding a high-level federal inquiry since the antisemitic attack took place.
Speaking about the timing of the Royal Commission announcement, 25 days after the Bondi attack, the Prime Minister said, “These recommendations and terms of reference were not created overnight; they were developed over time with proper community consultation to ensure we get this right.”
The Government’s initiative will focus on four key areas. First, investigating the nature and spread of antisemitism as well as the causes of religious and motivated extremism in Australia. Second, providing recommendations to enforcement, border, immigration, and security agencies on countering antisemitism. Third, examining the circumstances surrounding the Bondi Beach terrorist attack. Fourth, offering appropriate suggestions to strengthen social unity in Australia.
Albanese also set a deadline for the commission’s report, requiring Commissioner Virginia Bell to submit findings by 14 December 2026.
The decision to form the Royal Commission was approved during a Federal Cabinet meeting, reflecting the Government’s commitment to addressing antisemitism and enhancing social cohesion.
