Kolkata, April 26: An attack on a family in Baharampur, West Bengal, has been reported amid rising election tensions. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the Congress candidate from Baharampur, has accused members of the Trinamool Congress of orchestrating the assault. Three individuals, including two women, sustained injuries during the incident.
Following the attack, Chowdhury visited the scene to meet the victims. Speaking to the media, he recounted a distressing phone call he received during dinner. A woman on the line was crying, claiming that Trinamool Congress workers had attacked her family, vandalized their home, assaulted an elderly man, and harassed a woman.
Chowdhury alleged that the attack was retaliation for assistance provided by a family member during the election process. He explained, “During voting, one family member helped me. Afterward, while resting, a person noticed me sweating and offered me a fan. Trinamool Congress workers targeted that person’s family.”
He also raised concerns about the local police’s role, stating, “There is a reign of terror from goons here. The local police are aware of them. These individuals regularly consume alcohol and carry weapons, launching attacks at various locations.”
Chowdhury warned that the Congress party would not remain passive. He stated, “Wherever there is violence or injustice by the ruling party, we will be there. We made this clear before the elections and stand firm on it today. We will file a complaint regarding this incident. If no action is taken, we will begin protests against the local police in the next couple of days.”
