Assam to Launch Bamboo Bicycles in Guwahati Parks to Promote Local Economy

Guwahati, October 2 (Daily Kiran) : Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has highlighted the growing potential of bamboo as an industrial and economic resource. Soon, bamboo bicycles will be available for public use in various parks across Guwahati. This initiative aims to gather feedback from users before the commercial launch of the product.

Sarma recently took a ride on one of the bicycles, showcasing its entirely bamboo construction, which has also received certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). In a social media post, he shared, “Want to know what I’m riding? It’s a bamboo bicycle, made entirely of bamboo and certified by BIS.”

The Chief Minister announced that these bicycles will soon be placed in parks around Guwahati, allowing residents to test them and provide feedback on their experience before the official launch.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to showcase the potential of locally available bamboo in Assam and encourage its increased use across various industries. Sarma noted that over 800 sub-products can be created from bamboo found in Assam, which can be utilized in fields ranging from methanol production to aviation fuel and construction.

He also referenced the central government’s recent policy decision to classify bamboo as a grass. This change, according to Sarma, opens up new opportunities for its cultivation, processing, and industrial use under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

With abundant bamboo resources, the Assam government is emphasizing the promotion of bamboo-based industries and products. This strategy aims to enhance the value of local natural resources while creating new job opportunities and livelihoods.

The bamboo bicycle serves as an example of how traditional and locally sourced materials can be transformed into modern consumer products. Feedback collected from users in Guwahati parks is expected to provide insights into the bicycle’s design, usability, and performance, allowing for necessary improvements before a wider launch.

This initiative comes at a time when there is a growing emphasis on sustainable and locally sourced alternatives in manufacturing and infrastructure. Bamboo is being explored not only for transportation products but also as a construction material and industrial raw material.
