Guwahati, April 27: In a significant crackdown, police in Assam’s Cachar district have arrested five individuals for allegedly operating an illegal betting racket linked to the Indian Premier League (IPL). The operation was conducted based on specific intelligence, as reported on Monday.
A team from Cachar police initiated an operation in Silchar city, leading to the first arrest of a suspect identified as Sameer Aziz. During initial questioning, Aziz reportedly disclosed information about a larger network, prompting police to conduct further raids and apprehend four additional suspects.
The other accused have been identified as Saibul Hussain Laskar, Zahid Hussain Laskar, Rajat Kumar Singh, and Aftab Laskar.
During the operation, authorities seized ₹80,230 in cash, seven Android mobile phones, a notebook containing betting accounts, and four sheets allegedly used to record IPL betting activities.
Investigators suspect that these mobile phones were utilized for coordinating bets, communicating with gamblers, and maintaining records of digital transactions related to the gambling operation. The notebook and handwritten sheets are also under examination as part of the investigation.
The arrested individuals were presented in a local court on Monday. A case has been registered at the Silchar police station under relevant legal provisions, and further inquiries are underway to determine if more individuals are involved in this betting network.
Officials are also working to uncover potential financial connections, online payment channels, and contacts outside the district that may be linked to this racket.
Illegal betting activities typically surge during major sporting events like the IPL, prompting law enforcement agencies across various states to intensify their monitoring and enforcement efforts.
Police sources have indicated that actions against organized gambling networks in the district will continue, especially during the cricket season.
Authorities have urged citizens to report any suspicious betting activities and to refrain from participating in illegal gambling, warning that such activities often involve financial fraud and other criminal undertakings.
This recent operation comes amid heightened police actions against drug-related crimes, cyber offenses, and illegal betting syndicates operating through mobile apps and informal networks in Assam.
