Guwahati, May 1: Karimuddin Barbhuiya, a leader of the Assam Gan Parishad, claimed on Friday that many Muslims voted in favor of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He further asserted that the opposition’s dream of forming the next government would remain just that—a dream.
Barbhuiya, who joined the Assam Gan Parishad after leaving the All India United Democratic Front before the elections, stated that the mood of the voters was clearly in favor of the ruling coalition. He dismissed claims that an anti-incumbency wave would harm the BJP-led alliance in the state.
He predicted that the opposition parties would secure only about 35 seats in the 126-member assembly. He emphasized that attempts to present the idea of a government change were completely disconnected from the reality observed during the election campaign.
According to him, welfare delivery, road connectivity, law and order, and visible infrastructure development have strengthened public trust in the current government across all regions, including Barak Valley and Lower Assam.
In a sharp political statement, Barbhuiya remarked that it would be good if Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi wins his seat. He added that every democracy needs at least one individual willing to raise issues and challenge the government in the house.
However, he noted that diverse criticisms would not alter the large mandate and insisted that voters prefer continuity, stability, and rapid development over experimenting with fragmented opposition forces.
Recent estimates of seat and vote shares for the assembly elections indicated a significant advantage for the ruling alliance led by the BJP, with projections suggesting they could secure 102 seats, with a margin of plus or minus nine seats.
According to the exit poll by Today’s Chanakya, the opposition alliance led by the Indian National Congress is projected to win 23 seats (with a possible fluctuation of nine seats), while other parties are expected to secure about one seat.
If these trends hold, the BJP-led alliance is likely to maintain power in the 126-member assembly.
In terms of vote share, the BJP coalition is estimated to receive nearly 50 percent of the votes, with a possible fluctuation of three percentage points. The Congress-led faction is projected to garner 38 percent of the votes, while other parties and independent candidates may collectively achieve 12 percent.
