Guwahati, May 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reaffirmed the NDA government’s commitment to reclaim encroached land in the state on Sunday. He announced that a ground-level campaign against illegal occupations has already commenced.
The Chief Minister took to the social media platform X, stating that the government is fully dedicated to freeing vast tracts of illegally occupied land across Assam.
He wrote, “NDA 3.0 is committed to reclaiming over 1,250 square kilometers of encroached land in Assam. Our team is already working on the ground to fulfill this promise.”
CM Sarma shared a video showing yellow JCB machines demolishing structures and clearing debris made of wood and tin sheets. Reports indicate that this action was taking place in a rural hilly area.
Previously, CM Sarma has emphasized the need to accelerate the government’s anti-encroachment campaign. Just a day before taking the oath of office for the second time on May 11, he stated that Assam’s “land, identity, and future” are non-negotiable issues for his administration.
He also announced that during the NDA government’s new term, anti-encroachment efforts would be intensified, aiming to free approximately 500,000 bighas of land from encroachment.
On X, CM Sarma wrote, “There will be no compromise on Assam’s land, identity, and future. After freeing 150,000 bighas of land from encroachment, NDA 3.0 is now moving forward with a commitment to reclaim another 500,000 bighas for the people. For us, ‘jati, mati, bhet’ (community, land, and motherland) comes first.”
This slogan has been a central part of the BJP government’s political messaging in Assam, especially concerning issues of identity and land rights.
Meanwhile, CM Sarma reiterated his commitment to implementing a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in Assam. He stated that the government would strive to fulfill every promise made in the electoral manifesto.
In discussions with journalists, he remarked, “The UCC is part of our electoral manifesto. Therefore, not just the UCC, but we will attempt to implement every promise made in the manifesto 100 percent.”
His comments come at a time when the debate over implementing a Uniform Civil Code in BJP-ruled states has intensified nationally.
The proposed UCC aims to establish a uniform legal framework applicable to all citizens, replacing religion-based personal laws in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption.
