Guwahati, May 20: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Wednesday that the state government is conducting a comprehensive survey of government land available in and around Guwahati. The aim is to secure this land for future development projects, educational institutions, and industrial infrastructure.
During a visit to the Jagiroad assembly constituency, the Chief Minister informed reporters that significant amounts of government land have been identified in the Dharmatul area and its surroundings, which can be utilized for public purposes in the coming years.
He stated, “We are reviewing the government land available in areas like Jagiroad and Dharmatul. Various institutions, industrial estates, educational facilities, and other government amenities can be developed on this land.”
The Chief Minister emphasized that the government’s top priority is to protect these lands from encroachment and unregulated use.
He added, “Steps are being taken to secure government land, especially in areas surrounding Guwahati. Approximately 300 bighas of government land are available here. I am inspecting it today to ensure its safety.”
Sarma clarified that no specific projects have been finalized for this land yet, and the current focus is solely on preservation and strategic planning.
He remarked, “There is no solid plan for this land at the moment. The main objective is to safeguard it properly for future needs.”
Officials accompanying the Chief Minister revealed that the state government has recently intensified efforts to map and secure government land across several districts, particularly in rapidly urbanizing areas of Guwahati, where pressure from real estate expansion and encroachment is increasing.
In recent years, the state government has announced several infrastructure and industrial projects to boost economic activities in central Assam and the Guwahati metropolitan area. Jagiroad has emerged as a key area due to its strategic connectivity and proximity to the state capital.
The Chief Minister also mentioned that with elections now concluded, he aims to focus on governance and development rather than political discussions.
He stated, “The elections are over. I do not wish to talk about politics now.”
