Guwahati, June 15: Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma shared insights about his government’s development agenda and key policy priorities during a Facebook Live session on Sunday. He also expressed gratitude to the people of Assam for their overwhelming support in the recent assembly elections.
The Chief Minister stated that the Assam Assembly’s approval of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) fulfills a significant electoral promise and represents a major step towards ensuring social justice.
Sarma announced that several major welfare schemes would be relaunched in August, following the budget session starting on July 6. These schemes include Arunodoi, Nijut Moina, Nijut Babu, Jeevan Prerna, and the distribution of essential goods at subsidized rates.
Discussing the government’s infrastructure vision, he mentioned that work on several large projects is expected to commence soon. These projects include the Guwahati Ring Road, Kaziranga Elevated Corridor, the proposed ₹18,000 crore Numaligarh-Gohpur Tunnel, the Baithalangso-Tezpur Four-Lane Highway, the Guwahati Airport-Jalukbari Elevated Corridor, and the Siliguri-Silchar Expressway.
Sarma reiterated the state’s long-term goal of constructing an expressway connecting Guwahati and Tinsukia to enhance connectivity across Assam.
Regarding job creation, Sarma revealed that the government has begun preparations to generate job opportunities for two lakh youths, in line with its electoral promises. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to establish a university, a medical college, and an engineering college in every district, along with plans to build new medical colleges in Hailakandi, Hojai, Bajali, and Goalpara.
He announced that ₹500 crore has been approved to develop Dibrugarh as Assam’s second capital. Additionally, he discussed plans for a new airport in Silchar and the development of Rupsi Airport as a logistics hub.
Reaffirming his government’s commitment to preserving Assam’s identity, culture, heritage, and land, the Chief Minister emphasized that these priorities are central to the state’s development agenda.
Sarma also mentioned the potential visit of a prominent international figure to Assam alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi in early July, urging citizens to contribute to beautifying Guwahati in preparation for this visit.
Addressing the recent rise in petrol and diesel prices, Sarma attributed it to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and increasing crude oil prices in the international market. He expressed hope that consumers would find relief once global conditions stabilize.
In conclusion, the Chief Minister thanked the people of Assam for their continued support and reiterated his government’s commitment to inclusive growth and development in the state.
