Assam Chief Minister Hits Back at Congress Leader Singhvi Over Khera Controversy

Guwahati, May 1: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has sharply responded to Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, asserting that he does not need lessons in democracy, public discourse, or civility from anyone.

Sarma took to the social media platform X to express his views, stating, “I do not need to learn about democracy, public discourse, or decorum from anyone, especially A.M. Singhvi. Civility and Singhvi cannot coexist in the same room.”

He emphasized that the real issue is not political debate but the targeting of an individual. Sarma accused Singhvi of attempting to tarnish the character of a woman with no political ties, using fake documents from other countries on national television.

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the courts would take cognizance of the matter and punish those responsible. He remarked, “I believe that the courts will eventually address this issue and penalize those who defame a woman using false documents to influence electoral outcomes.”

Sarma also accused Singhvi of avoiding direct debate, saying, “It is easy to speak where I am not present. This is not debate; it is avoiding fair dialogue.”

He concluded his statement with, “This is just the beginning, not the end. Satyamev Jayate.”

This statement came after Singhvi criticized Sarma’s role in the Pawan Khera case, referencing recent comments from the Supreme Court. Singhvi stated that some public statements related to this controversy were inappropriate and weakened democratic norms.

He also emphasized the importance of protecting dissent and freedom of expression in a democracy.

Recently, the Supreme Court granted anticipatory bail to Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera in connection with alleged comments regarding Sarma’s wife, Rinki Bhuiyan Sarma. Justices J.K. Maheshwari and A.S. Chandurkar provided relief with certain conditions.

Following these recent exchanges, political tensions between the BJP and Congress in Assam have escalated, with both parties continuously accusing each other over this sensitive issue.
