Guwahati, April 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Pawan Khera on Monday. He accused Khera of disseminating “fabricated documents” and misusing AI to defame his family ahead of the elections.
This strong response came a day after Khera held a press conference in New Delhi, alleging that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the Chief Minister’s wife, holds passports from the UAE, Antigua, and Egypt. He also accused the Chief Minister of concealing foreign properties, including assets in Dubai.
Khera demanded a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into alleged financial connections with an American company.
During the press conference, Sarma claimed that Congress had reached a “new low” by circulating fake passports and company records in his wife’s name. He warned that Khera could face serious legal consequences, including life imprisonment, under charges of “criminal conspiracy.” Sarma asserted that the documents presented by Congress contained numerous glaring inconsistencies.
He stated, “These so-called passports linked to my wife are entirely fake. They contain spelling errors, incorrect formats, and even non-functional QR codes.” He further explained that Dubai does not grant citizenship in the manner claimed, labeling the allegations as “factually impossible.”
In a dramatic demonstration, the Chief Minister revealed that his team created two companies under his wife’s name within 24 hours using online tools, costing around ₹40,000, to illustrate how easily fake entities can be established.
He also claimed that a similar institution was created in the name of Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi to support his argument.
Targeting the Congress leadership, Sarma expressed his astonishment that the son of former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had “stooped to this level.” He accused the opposition party of orchestrating a failed plot to mislead voters, asserting that people would not be swayed by “fake documents” but would vote based on development and employment.
The Assam Chief Minister also alleged that Khera was being used by his own party, claiming that Congress provided him with these fabricated materials after failing to sideline him previously.
