Guwahati, Mar 7 : 11.42 percent votes were polled till 9 am in the by-election to Assam’s Majuli constituency amid strict security arrangements on Monday.The seat fell vacant after former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was elected to the Rajya Sabha.Voting, which began at 7 AM, is taking place under strict Covid19 guidelines. The electors have to mandatorily wear a mask and maintain social distancing while voting.The main fight is likely between the state’s ruling BJP and the Congress-supported Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) in the world’s largest riverine island. The candidates in the fray are BJP’s Bhuban Gam, the opposition’s joint nominee Chittaranjan Basumatary of the AJP and Bhaity Richong of the SUCI(C).A high-pitched campaigning was witnessed with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visiting the constituency twice to seek votes for the party candidate.Altogether 1,33,227 electors are eligible to decide the fate of the three candidates.
