New Delhi, March 27: Former Indian bowler Ravichandran Ashwin believes that MS Dhoni should not participate as an impact player in IPL 2026. Ashwin argues that if Dhoni is to play as an impact player, he should not participate for the entire season.
On his YouTube channel ‘Ash’s Talk,’ Ashwin stated, “I do not agree that Dhoni should be on the list of impact players. If he is in the squad, he should play in every match. If he does not want to, then he should not play the entire season. I am not in favor of Dhoni playing as an impact player.”
According to Ashwin, Dhoni has been training for the past three months and is eager to play. He mentioned, “Dhoni should be in the playing eleven. If he does not want to play, he will retire. He is 100% confident that he can still play. He has been practicing for three months. He is sending the message that he wants to play. No one can tell him that he cannot play if he wants to.”
It is noteworthy that Dhoni has been batting lower in the order for the past two seasons. His performance in IPL 2025 was also underwhelming, scoring only 196 runs at a strike rate of 135 over 14 matches, without a single half-century. This decision faced criticism, especially after regular captain Ruturaj Gaikwad was sidelined, leading Dhoni to captain the team last season.
The Chennai Super Kings had a disappointing run in IPL 2025, finishing at the bottom of the table with only four wins out of 14 matches. However, this season, the team is banking on young players and aims for a better performance.
