New Delhi, August 8: Ashok Diwan is celebrated as one of India’s greatest hockey goalkeepers. Throughout his international career, he achieved numerous significant milestones. He was a key member of the Indian team that won the Hockey World Cup, contributing immensely to their victory.
Born on August 9, 1954, Ashok had a deep passion for hockey from a young age and quickly decided to pursue a career in the sport. As a goalkeeper, he made a name for himself at the domestic level. His consistent performances earned him a spot on the Indian national hockey team. In 1975, he was selected to participate in the World Cup, where he lived up to the expectations placed upon him, showcasing exceptional goalkeeping skills throughout the tournament.
In the final match against Pakistan, Ashok made several crucial saves, leading India to its first-ever championship title. Since that historic win in 1975, the Indian hockey team has not been able to reclaim the World Cup title. Ashok was also part of the Indian team at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, although the team’s performance was disappointing.
The Olympic hockey matches were held on artificial turf, which posed challenges for the Indian team, unaccustomed to such surfaces. During practice, Ashok even suffered injuries, losing two teeth. The team, considered a strong contender for the gold medal, returned empty-handed from the Olympics. Following this, Ashok played a pivotal role in leading the Indian team to victories in several important tournaments.
In 2002, he was honored with the Major Dhyan Chand Award for his contributions to the sport. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Ashok traveled to the United States to visit his son but became stranded due to visa restrictions. His health deteriorated unexpectedly, prompting him to seek assistance from India’s sports ministry and the Olympic association. The Indian government subsequently arranged for his medical treatment, and he successfully recovered.
