
Sydney: On the second day of the fifth Ashes Test 2025-26, England was bowled out for 384 runs. Australia responded strongly, reaching 166 for 2 wickets by stumps, with a lead of 218 runs still remaining for England. Australian opener Travis Head is just nine runs short of a century.
At the Sydney Cricket Ground, England won the toss and chose to bat first. The visiting side faced 97.3 overs in their first innings, posting a total of 384 runs.
England lost three wickets early, at a score of 57. Joe Root then built a crucial partnership with Harry Brook, adding 169 runs for the fourth wicket to take the score to 226.
Brook scored 84 runs off 97 balls, including one six and six fours before he was dismissed. Root then forged a 94-run partnership with Jamie Smith for the sixth wicket, taking the team past the 300-run mark. Smith contributed 46 runs off 76 balls before getting out. Following this, Root and Will Jacks added 52 runs for the seventh wicket. Root played a commanding innings of 160 runs from 242 balls, hitting 15 fours.
From the Australian bowling attack, Michael Neser was the most successful, taking four wickets. Mitchell Starc and Scott Boland took two wickets each.
In reply, Australia batted 34.1 overs by stumps, losing two wickets for 166 runs.
Travis Head and Jack Wildermuth put together a 57-run opening stand. Wildermuth contributed 21 runs. Head then shared a 105-run partnership with Marnus Labuschagne, who scored 48 runs off 68 balls, including seven fours, before getting out. Head remained unbeaten on 91 runs from 87 deliveries. Ben Stokes was England’s only successful bowler, claiming both wickets in 8.1 overs for 30 runs.
