Asaram Returns to Ahmedabad Ashram After 10 Years on Bail
Ahmedabad, January 28: Controversial self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, serving a life sentence for raping a minor, has returned to Gujarat after being granted interim conditional bail by the Supreme Court on medical grounds. After nearly a decade, Asaram entered his Motera Ashram in Ahmedabad, amid heightened security and public scrutiny.

Supreme Courtโs Conditional Bail Order
The Supreme Court granted interim bail to Asaram until March 31, 2025, with the condition that he must not meet his followers during this period. Asaram, who had been incarcerated at Jodhpur Central Jail since his conviction in 2018, left the prison following the courtโs order and headed directly to his Ahmedabad ashram.
Despite the explicit conditions of his bail, news of his arrival triggered a surge of followers at the ashram. The local police have been put on high alert to prevent any law-and-order issues and ensure compliance with the bail terms. Round-the-clock patrolling has been implemented to maintain peace around the premises.
A Decade of Controversy and Convictions
Asaramโs return to the Motera Ashram marks his first visit in a decade, and the property has been at the center of numerous controversies over the years. Some of the key incidents include:
- Unnatural deaths of Dipesh and Abhishek, two young boys linked to the ashram.
- Multiple rape and sexual assault cases, including the conviction that led to his life sentence.
- Allegations of illegal activities by his followers and management.
These controversies have made the ashram a focal point for both media and legal scrutiny.
Police on High Alert
The Chandkheda Police have intensified security measures around the ashram to ensure no violations of the bail conditions. Officers are closely monitoring the situation to prevent any unauthorized gatherings or incidents of unrest.
A police official stated:
โWe are committed to ensuring that no new controversies arise during Asaramโs interim bail period. Our team is on high alert and patrolling 24/7.โ
Background of Conviction
In April 2018, Asaram was convicted by a Jodhpur court for the rape of a minor girl at his ashram. He was sentenced to life imprisonment for his crimes. Additionally, his son, Narayan Sai, was also convicted in April 2019 by a Surat court on similar charges of rape.
