Srinagar : A soldier allegedly shot himself dead in Kashmir on Monday, Defence officials confirmed. The incident took place at around 1530 hrs inside the headquarter of Army’s Counter Insurgency Division at Awantipora in south Kashmir.

“Sepoy Mohit of 34 Rashtriya Rifles unit allegedly fired himself with his personal weapon in Victor Force Headquarters at Awantipora while on post duty,” a Defence official said. However, it could not immediately be ascertained as to what forced the soldier to take the extreme step.

Since the militancy erupted, dozens of soldiers have committed suicide or have been killed by their colleagues. Most of the times, the reason for such incidents are believed to be “high level of work stress”.
