Mumbai, February 27: Renowned defense expert and former military officer Maroof Raza passed away on February 26 at the age of 67.
Raza was notably active in counter-terrorism operations. Actor Anupam Kher expressed his sorrow over Raza’s death, as the two shared a deep friendship and frequently exchanged views on various issues. Kher took to social media to share a memory from their last meeting.
He posted a photo of Raza on platform X, mourning the loss. Raza had been battling cancer for an extended period, and his passing left many in shock.
Kher wrote, “I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Maroof Raza. He was a dear friend, a courageous soul, and one of the leading voices in discussions on India’s national security. Maroof fought a long and dignified battle against cancer. Even in illness, he displayed courage and grace. The last time I spoke with him, he was still his warm, affectionate self—curious, sharp, and open with his thoughts.”
He continued, “Maroof was a guiding light in the world of national security journalism. Whenever he spoke on television, I listened intently, as he spoke with knowledge, conviction, and responsibility. His insights were never loud but always impactful. Most of all, I will miss his warmth. My heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. Om Shanti.”
Maroof Raza was an alumnus of Mayo College in Ajmer, Rajasthan, where he served as the school captain in 1975. He frequently participated in television debates, offering strong responses and opinions on national security, counter-terrorism efforts, and the India-Pakistan relationship, including border tensions. He was known for his unique vision in television discussions and held visiting fellowships at the Centre for Policy Research in Delhi, the Henry L. Stimson Center in Washington, and the Department of War Studies at King’s College London.
