Amaravati, April 27: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu directed officials on Monday to ensure uninterrupted power supply despite the soaring electricity demand during the intense summer heat.
In a meeting, he reviewed the summer power supply plan for 2026-27, along with the implementation of the Prime Minister’s Solar Rooftop and Kusum schemes.
Officials informed the Chief Minister that daily electricity demand during the summer is expected to range between 275 and 285 million units. They reported that the state has consumed 6,397 million units of electricity this month alone, marking a 14% increase compared to the same period last year. The rise in demand is attributed to both the heat and increased industrial consumption.
According to an official statement, Naidu emphasized the need for technological advancements to strengthen the power sector. He stated that continuous studies on low-cost electricity generation methods and global innovations should be conducted.
Officials also provided details on power purchase plans for the next six months. They noted that the average power purchase cost has decreased from ₹5.20 per unit in April 2025 to ₹4.90 per unit by March 2026.
Naidu insisted that the cost of electricity procurement should be further reduced, urging officials to explore all possible measures. He set a target to bring the electricity purchase cost down to ₹4.60 per unit by the end of this year.
He also highlighted the importance of utilizing technology to provide better services to citizens. There should be a greater focus on research and analysis in the energy sector. AP Transco, AP Genco, and related institutions should allocate CSR funds for research, and if necessary, the state government will provide budgetary support. Steps should be taken to establish an energy university.
The Chief Minister stressed that clean and environmentally friendly electricity production should be prioritized, aiming for over half of the state’s power to come from renewable energy sources by 2028-29.
He noted that under the Prime Minister’s Solar Rooftop scheme, 52,396 solar rooftop connections have been provided so far, and he instructed officials to expedite implementation. The state should aim to provide 200,000 Prime Minister Solar Rooftop connections each month.
