Amritsar, September 20 (Daily Kiran) : A significant development unfolded in Amritsar regarding the murder of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Harjeet Singh. Late Sunday night, Punjab police killed the main suspect during a police encounter. The suspect sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange and succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital. However, another accomplice managed to escape amid the chaos.
Police Commissioner Harmanveer Singh Gill reported that one assailant was killed in the encounter, while his partner took advantage of the darkness to flee. The deceased suspect was identified as Deepak Singh, a resident of Mula Chak in Amritsar.
Following the murder of ASI Harjeet Singh on September 18, the police force dedicated itself to solving the case. A red alert was issued in the city and surrounding areas, leading to heightened security measures. Authorities received credible intel indicating that suspects were roaming in the area, searching for other potential targets. When police attempted to stop two suspicious individuals on a scooter at the Thanda Road checkpoint, they opened fire instead.
According to police officials, after the initial confrontation, the suspects parked their scooter and continued firing at the pursuing police team. Of the four shots fired by the assailants, two struck the police vehicle, and one hit a CIA officer in the chest. Fortunately, the officer was wearing a bulletproof vest, which saved his life.
In self-defense, police fired six rounds in return, injuring one of the attackers. The wounded suspect was rushed to the hospital but unfortunately died en route. Initial investigations suggest he was between 25 and 28 years old. A combing operation is underway to capture the second suspect who escaped.
During a press conference, the police commissioner made a shocking revelation that the entire conspiracy is linked to handlers based in Pakistan. These handlers have been luring Punjab’s youth into drug trafficking and other criminal activities with promises of money. The commissioner explained that these Pakistani operatives require proof of loyalty from the youth, which leads to targeted attacks against police personnel.
Investigations also uncovered that after shooting ASI Harjeet Singh, the assailants returned to the scene to film a 30-40 second video, intending to send it as proof of their actions to their handlers across the border. This act was captured on CCTV, and police are conducting a forensic analysis of the mobile devices to expose the entire network of foreign handlers.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, the police commissioner lamented the tragic reality that young individuals from the state are being manipulated by Pakistani traffickers to turn against their own. ASI Harjeet Singh, who rose through the ranks through hard work, leaves behind a family, including two daughters and a son born after 15 years.
Earlier, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria raised concerns about the state’s law and order situation following the murder. He stated that the incidents in Punjab highlight the weaknesses in the law enforcement system. The governor acknowledged ongoing efforts but admitted that they have yet to meet public expectations.
