Kolkata, April 10: Union Home Minister Amit Shah addressed the ongoing controversy surrounding Humayun Kabir during the BJP’s manifesto launch in Kolkata on Friday. He firmly stated that the BJP would not ally with those responsible for the Babri Masjid, regardless of the circumstances.
Shah also took a jab at Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee, suggesting that the ruling party was behind the viral audio clip featuring Kabir. In the clip, Kabir allegedly assures state BJP leaders of full support in removing the TMC from power. When asked about a potential ‘deal’ between Kabir and the BJP for the Bengal elections, Shah remarked, “You underestimate Mamata’s capabilities; she can create 2,000 such videos.”
He dismissed any possibility of an alliance with Kabir’s newly formed ‘Aam Aadmi Unnayan Party,’ stating, “Humayun Kabir and the BJP are like the South Pole and North Pole. We can never align. We would prefer to remain in opposition for the next 20 years rather than ally with those who built the Babri Masjid.”
On Thursday, West Bengal ministers Firhad Hakim and Arup Biswas held a press conference where they released an alleged audio clip of Kabir. In it, Kabir purportedly claimed that he and his party would support the BJP in the upcoming elections.
The audio clip reportedly features Kabir assuring an unknown individual that if the BJP successfully attracts a majority of Hindu votes this time, he would play a crucial role in dividing Muslim votes to oust the TMC from power.
Kabir also claimed to be in regular contact with opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, promising full support for the new BJP Chief Minister.
This alleged tape leak has stirred political turmoil, with the ruling TMC accusing the BJP of attempting to influence elections through financial means. Meanwhile, the AIMIM, led by Asaduddin Owaisi, has severed ties with Kabir’s party and decided to contest the elections independently in West Bengal.
