Akhil Gogoi Backs Gaurav Gogoi as CM Candidate in Assam Opposition Unity Move

Guwahati: Akhil Gogoi, president of the Raijor Dal and MLA from Sivasagar, announced on Sunday that opposition parties in Assam are working towards forming a united front against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the upcoming assembly elections. Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi has emerged as the preferred Chief Minister candidate in this alliance.

The key meeting of opposition leaders took place earlier in the day at Orchid Park in Golaghat. After arriving in Guwahati, Akhil Gogoi said that seven political parties participated in discussions aimed at strengthening coordination for the electoral battle ahead.

“In today’s meeting, we clearly stated that Gaurav Gogoi should be made the Chief Minister of Assam. Seven parties will fight together against the BJP,” he said, adding that the Congress leadership has given its theoretical consent.

Gogoi noted that while all parties are broadly aligned on opposition unity, negotiations over seat sharing are still ongoing.

“The final seat distribution could not be completed today, but discussions were very positive. We are asking to contest 15 assembly seats. Although we have organisational strength to contest more seats across Upper Assam, Lower Assam, and other areas, we are willing to contest only 15 seats for the sake of unity,” he explained.

Targeting the BJP-led state government and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Akhil Gogoi said the opposition campaign will focus on removing the current government from power.

He accused the Chief Minister of making divisive statements to maintain his image and emphasised that the opposition aims to bring together people of all communities in Assam. “Our fight is against corruption and communal politics. We will continue this struggle,” he affirmed.

This development signals increased efforts among opposition parties to unite ahead of the Assam assembly elections, setting the stage for a significant political contest in the northeastern state.
