Aircel Maxis deal: Former Union Minister P Chidambaram, son get bail

New Delhi, March 23 : A Delhi Special Court on Wednesday granted regular bail to former on Minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti in cases of corruption and Money Laundering registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) against the father-son duo, in connection with the Aircel Maxis deal. The national agencies probed the case related to the alleged irregularities in the grant of Foreign Investment Promotion Board approval in the Aircel-Maxis deal, which was granted in 2006, when Chidambaram was the Finance Minister. It was alleged that Chidambaram had granted approval to the deal beyond his capacity, when he was the Finance Minister and benefited certain persons and received kickbacks. In this matter, the Special Judge granted anticipatory bail to both the accused with the conditions of furnishing bail bonds of Rs one lakh each in both the cases, along with certain terms and conditions. After filing the charge sheet by investigating agency, the court took cognisance and issued summons for appearance before the Court. The Counsel on behalf of Chidambaram and Karti moved the regular bail application with the submission that the applicants have co-operated with the Investigating Agency at the time of investigation. The Special Court of Rouse Avenue District granted bail with the condition of furnishing the surety bond of Rs one lakh each in both the cases. The Court had earlier adjourned sine die the Aircel-Maxis matter with the direction to the investigating agency to file status report in the matter. XC RJ
