New Delhi, May 13: Air India has announced the suspension of several international flights for three months starting in June due to escalating jet fuel prices linked to the Middle East crisis. Reports indicate that flights from Delhi to major destinations such as Chicago, Newark, Singapore, and Shanghai will be reduced.
Additionally, the airline has cut back on flights to San Francisco, Paris, and Toronto. Overall, Air India has reduced approximately 100 flights daily.
CEO Campbell Wilson stated last week that the airline will continue to cut international services amid rising fuel costs and geopolitical tensions.
Facing increasing financial pressure and operational challenges, Air India has tightened its internal compliance and cost-control measures. Over the past three years, the airline has dismissed more than 1,000 employees for ethical misconduct and policy violations.
Wilson revealed this information during a town hall meeting with employees last week. He informed staff that actions have been taken against those involved in various violations, including the misuse of the Employee Leisure Travel (ELT) system, smuggling of luggage on flights, and allowing excess baggage without proper charges.
This strict action comes at a time when the airline is grappling with a severe financial crisis. The Air India group, which includes Air India and Air India Express, is projected to incur losses exceeding ₹22,000 crore for the financial year ending March 2026.
Under the Tata Group’s extensive restructuring and reform efforts, the airline has already implemented several cost-saving measures. These include halting annual salary increases for employees, cutting discretionary spending, and reducing non-essential expenses across all departments.
