New Delhi: The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), responsible for probing aviation accidents, has recommended mandatory video recording of all activities inside Air Traffic Control (ATC) towers at international airports across India. This measure aims to strengthen investigations and prevent future air mishaps.
The suggestion follows the AAIB’s inquiry into a runway incident at Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, in November last year, where an Ariana Afghan Airlines aircraft mistakenly landed on an unauthorized runway. The bureau noted that having comprehensive video footage would enable investigators to closely examine the actions of air traffic controllers during such critical events.
According to AAIB, the video systems should also capture background communications within the control rooms. This data is crucial to understanding decision-making processes under abnormal or high-risk conditions and to reconstructing the sequence of events accurately.
The bureau emphasized that these recordings must be accessible to both the AAIB and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for thorough examination. Implementing such technology-based monitoring tools is seen as a priority to enhance aviation safety and accountability at India’s international airports.
Additionally, the AAIB has already secured initial statements from the involved flight crew and air traffic controllers, along with radar data and communication transcripts, as part of the ongoing investigation into the runway deviation incident. While no individual has yet been held responsible, the bureau has expanded its inquiry to include testimonies from crew members of other flights operating nearby at the time.
