AIADMK Legislators to Meet in Chennai Amid Discussions of External Support for Vijays TVK

Chennai, May 6: The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is buzzing with activity as the newly elected AIADMK legislators prepare for a crucial meeting in Chennai on Wednesday. Reports suggest that a faction within the party is in favor of extending external support to actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay’s party, TVK, for at least one year.

This development is significant as TVK has emerged as the largest party in the state assembly, yet it falls short of a majority. With 234 seats in the Tamil Nadu assembly, a total of 118 seats is required for a majority, while TVK has secured 108 seats.

As the largest party, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar may invite Vijay to form the government. After taking the oath as Chief Minister, Vijay will need to prove his majority in the assembly within a stipulated timeframe.

However, political analysts believe that gathering the necessary numbers will not be an easy task for TVK. Vijay has won from two constituencies, meaning he must vacate one seat, reducing the party’s count to 107. Additionally, the Speaker typically does not vote in confidence motions, so TVK will require the support of at least 11 to 12 extra legislators.

Since TVK contested the elections without a coalition, negotiations have intensified with parties from both the DMK and AIADMK camps. Sources indicate that the DMK’s ally, Congress, which won five seats, is seen as more willing to support Vijay.

Reports suggest that Rahul Gandhi’s phone call congratulating Vijay is being interpreted as a potential sign of collaboration. Meanwhile, AIADMK’s ally PMK, which won four seats, also appears ready to extend support. Discussions are underway for a meeting between PMK leader Ambumani Ramadoss and Vijay.

Vijay has already expressed his willingness to form a coalition government, raising hopes for smaller parties to gain cabinet positions. Analysts believe that if AIADMK provides external support, Vijay could easily secure a majority and maintain a strong grip on the government.
