New Delhi: Ahead of the IPL 2026 season, intense speculation surrounds the possible change in ownership of the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) franchise. Amid these developments, Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India and a prominent industrialist, has publicly expressed interest in acquiring RCB.
On Thursday, Poonawalla took to the social media platform X to announce, “I am preparing to place a strong and competitive bid for RCB in the coming months. It is one of the best teams in the IPL.”
Following RCB’s championship win in IPL 2025 and the unfortunate incidents during the victory celebrations, rumours of the franchise being put up for sale have gained momentum. Although similar reports have surfaced in the past and proven untrue, the team’s recent success, growing fan base, and the controversies have increased the likelihood of a change in ownership.
Reports indicate that besides Adar Poonawalla, Vijay Kiragandur’s company, Hombale Films, is also interested in purchasing the team. Hombale Films is known for producing blockbuster movies like ‘KGF’ and ‘Kantara’.
RCB, the current IPL champions, ended a 17-year wait by clinching their first title in the 18th season (IPL 2025). Led by captain Rajat Patidar, they defeated Punjab Kings, captained by Shreyas Iyer, in a thrilling final to claim the coveted trophy.
Following the victory, a massive celebration took place on June 4 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the team management, players, and fans gathered. Approximately three lakh people attended the event, exceeding the administration’s expectations. Unfortunately, the crowd outside the stadium became uncontrollable, resulting in a stampede that claimed 11 lives and left over 50 people injured. This tragic incident dealt a significant blow to the team’s image.
