Mumbai, August 31: Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, stated on Monday that major projects like the Khavda Renewable Energy Park and the Mundra and Vizhinjam ports not only build capacity but also bring significant changes to the surrounding economy.
Addressing the annual summit of the rating agency CareEdge Group, Adani remarked, “India has entered a completely new phase. The nature of infrastructure has changed, and as India builds, the complexity of our rating framework must evolve accordingly.”
The billionaire entrepreneur emphasized, “If we only focus on today’s demands, India will always lag in seizing future opportunities.”
He noted that Mundra Port in Gujarat is now the largest port in India, but three decades ago, it was dismissed as a marshy area lacking any industrial ecosystem based on traditional ratings.
“Today, Mundra is one of India’s most crucial commercial gateways. More importantly, it has created an ecosystem that is many times larger than the port itself. This port is connected by rail, linked to rail logistics centers, and associated with logistics power plants. It is tied to industrial zones that connect traders and manufacturers across India,” he explained.
Similarly, the Vizhinjam port project in Kerala saw no interest for 25 years due to its perceived challenges and high capital risk, despite the pressing need for such a deep-water port in the country. Nevertheless, the Adani Group took the initiative to develop it.
He elaborated, “We were just 10 nautical miles away from the world’s busiest shipping route, yet we couldn’t handle our container cargo. We had to rely on transshipment through Singapore, Dubai, and Colombo. For decades, Indian trade had to pay sovereignty taxes to foreign ports because domestic infrastructure was considered too risky for institutional capital.”
From a traditional perspective, Adani noted that the Khavda project also appears to be a harsh desert, fraught with risks of completion and uncertain demand.
“However, what is often overlooked is that Khavda is not just a renewable energy project. It is a platform where energy, artificial intelligence, manufacturing, digital infrastructure, and industrial capacity converge at unprecedented levels,” he stated.
This project could provide the clean electrons necessary to power India’s future computing infrastructure. It serves as the foundation for India’s AI manufacturing ecosystem and could be integral to the establishment of the country’s AI economy.
He remarked that previously, India’s infrastructure ambitions were limited by scarce resources, capacity, and confidence. Today, however, India possesses resources and has proven its capacity, but more importantly, it has learned to trust in its potential, which ultimately transforms a nation’s future.
Gautam Adani concluded by stating that the country’s roads, ports, and airports are expanding at an unprecedented pace. The capacity for renewable energy is growing faster than in any other country, and digital infrastructure is reaching millions.
