Abhishek Sharma Stresses Team Identity Amidst Performance Fluctuations

New Delhi, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Indian opener Abhishek Sharma has firmly stated that the identity of the Indian cricket team will not be defined by a few series results. His comments came after a spectacular performance in the first T20 match against Afghanistan, where he scored 82 runs off just 32 balls.

Sharma emphasized that poor results in one or two series do not alter the team’s approach to the game. He noted that the Indian squad is committed to playing fearless and positive cricket, urging that assessments of their batting style should not be based on a handful of disappointing outcomes.

His explosive fifty, achieved in just 22 balls, laid the groundwork for India’s impressive seven-wicket victory. The hosts chased down a target of 157 runs with ease, losing only three wickets in 13.4 overs. Reflecting on the match, Sharma remarked, “Once you decide how you want to play, it sticks with you. I remember two years ago we determined that we wanted to play a certain way.”

He added, “We aimed to dominate all teams throughout the year leading up to the World Cup, and things have gone well for us, especially for the batsmen. However, I believe that our batting unit’s identity won’t be determined by one or two series, as we always prioritize the team’s needs. We want to provide a strong start as openers, especially on such pitches. A solid beginning can put you in a winning position when chasing 150-160 runs.”

In addition to his batting contributions, Sharma also shone in the field, taking a stunning catch in the slip off Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling to dismiss Rahmanullah Gurbaz without scoring. He expressed satisfaction with the catch, saying, “Taking a catch in the first over, especially in slips, boosts your confidence. We started our innings on that note, and I’m very happy with it.”

Discussing the experience of fielding while Bumrah bowls, Sharma acknowledged the need for constant vigilance when facing such a world-class fast bowler. “In T20 cricket, it can be intense. Even in practice, facing him feels like playing the initial overs of a Test match. Thus, it’s crucial to stay alert in slips for him,” he concluded.
